Jacob and I gave the SpyCraft CCG a play while at the coast over the weekend.  We also played several other games - I'll post some pics shortly - but I wanted to give a few quick comments on this game.

I really wanted to like this, and thought it had some promise after getting a demo at GenCon.  Maybe I'm just getting spoiled playing euro-style games and their (generally) clear rules and quick learning curve, but I found this game very confusing to learn and explain.  There are certainly great thematic elements to this game and the artwork is good (but not great, especially relative to my favorites: Magic, A Game of Thrones, and 7th Sea).  The rules just didn't sit right with me.

I had the hardest time understanding when certain things could be done, what the always-available actions were during certain phases (e.g., you can always do a combat action during any style of mission, but not a transport action).  There are also a number of things that can be done by certain factions.  My opinion is that once you know the system of the game, you should be able to play it from the cards and not have to remember certain special actions.  What if in Magic, if you played black, you could do an automatic Drain Life each turn?  That would just be silly.

I'm probably being too hard on the game, and if I sat down with someone who was experienced to explain it to me I would probably grok it much more quickly, but I just don't have the patience.  Give me 7th Sea any time...

Thanks for the report. Chuck and I were looking into this, as I am a AEG fan from the Doomtown/7th Sea days.

"What if in Magic, if you played black, you could do an automatic Drain Life each turn? That would just be silly."

Yeah, but, if, when you played red, you could do an automatic Shock each turn, that would be FREAKIN' AWESOME!!!

Or a lightning bolt! Or a fireball!

I'm happy to loan out my Spycraft decks if you want to give it a try. I'd love a second opinion. Then maybe you could teach me the rules.

I was really considering giving spycraft a try, but i decided to pick up some cards for the new Cthulhu game from Fantasy Flight. Glowing reviews on BGG, i think it looks pretty promising. I've got two decks to give a go if you guys are interested (Chuck may be into it too, but he seems on the game of thones CCG bandwagon right now, don't want to tempt him with another product...)

Dang man...I need to get down to Portland sometime. I've been toying with the idea of getting into a CCG on a VERY limited basis (I just sold some old MTG cards for $500 which should tell how much that one bit me). Which do you think works best on that basis (starter and very occasional booster)? Or should I just try out Blue Moon? Cthulhu looks interesting (I'm not a Lovecraft fan though..don't dislike it, just never read any). Allegiance also looks interesting..although it seems to shine as multiplayer.

Oh...and I vote for a Giant Growth every turn (except I always ended up playing Blue and a Counterspell every turn is just silly).

I think you should seriously consider A Game of Thrones CCG. The starter decks play very well, the game is exceedingly simple to learn, and the artwork is fantastic. You will especially appreciate the game if you've read the books.

I'm not a big fan of Blue Moon. Too much like playing war (the card game). I know there are real subtleties there, but I'm just not a big fan of it.

Come down to Portland and we'll try a few. Especially 7th Sea!

Re AGoT: Note that the "premium starter" sets play very well; the traditional starter decks don't, and that goes doubly so for the new addition. The "premium starter" set for the new edition isn't out yet.

I just noticed that Mike mentioned Allegiance here. If anyone is interested in playing let me know. You can also go to www.allegianceccg.com for more info.
