I recently borrowed 18FL from Eric Landes to try another easier 2-player 18xx game with Jacob. We played a couple of weekends ago, again with good results, but it is clearly time to move onto some multiplayer 18xx. Playing with two players (especially as nice as we play) does drag a bit towards the end-game - we felt as if we were on autopilot and stopped a turn short with the bank nearly out of money but not quite.

18FL with Jacob

Jacob played the southern tier primarily, building the line to Cuba knowing it would get wiped out, then building it again in the final phase. When I say we played nice, I mean real nice - nobody tokened out Ft. Lauderdale or Miami, allowing the northern lines to run freely to Cuba.

18FL Board

Final scores: Chris $9,747, Jacob $7,995. Time to reach out to Eric to schedule a 3 or 4 player game, perhaps we try out 1850 again and play along the Mississippi.

You're on, Chris :) I've stored up a little parental Karma as Jodie's been in Europe on business since Saturday.

Matt Riley might be interested as well.

I wouldn't mind giving 1825 a shot. Matt's also got 18Scan coming in next week.

I just got my copy of 18FL in the mail this week. I'm cutting out the components tonight, and I'll be giving the rules a good read this weekend. What's the verdict on the 2-player? It seems you got a little bit board - was that because you've played 2-player 18xx a couple of times before, or was there something about 2-player 18FL you didn't like?

While I'm not in a position to build/spend parent karma (Isabel Christine, July 16, 2007,) I CAN manipulate my employees work schedules in order to play <decadence>during the day, on a weekday</decadence.>

Jeff - I don't think Chris was dissatisfied with 18FL, I think the combination of 2p plus a *lack* of cutthroat play (thus the "too nice,") led to a predictable endgame.

(Did I type "got a little bit board"? Yikes, pardon my spelling. An interesting mistake when discussing boardgames!)

Wes is correct - 18FL is a fine 18XX game, but we are both ready for the more dynamic interaction that comes from 3+ players.

Thanks for the non, Eric. I would be interested.
