Jim’s Notes
- It’s a very good John Mayer album. In general, I’d nearly always prefer to listen to Room for Squares over any other release. The production values on this album are head and shoulders better than Room for Squares but Room is more fun.
- I think you could rock harder on some of these tracks and the album would be considerably better in my mind.
- Good cans (I finally listened on my Px8s) are a must I think. So much going on in the background that AirPods don’t provide enough clarity and separation.
- Bold as Love is a really good Hendrix cover. Nearly made it my bench.
- If she really did all those things, why would you go find another one like that? I’m Gonna Find Another You is an odd Dear John/break up song.
- Other albums released in 2006: The Decemberists - The Crane Wife; debut albums from Taylor Swift, Arctic Monkeys and The Kooks; Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium; The Black Keys - Magic Potion.
Chris’s Notes
Loved it start to finish. First album in a while where I was eager to run through another listen. Didn’t expect a Marvin Gaye-style protest album. Strong R&B foundation. Best songs have ongoing guitar counter-melodies at play. Didn’t love the Hendrix cover but it is serviceable. Cut “I’m Gonna Find Another You” as it feels like a throwaway final track. “Dreaming with a Broken Heart” was a contender as I don’t love him on a piano ballad but the song gets better the deeper you get into it.
